A senior Russian military figure has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Investigators indicated that one line of inquiry involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Site of the Incident

Officials have been sent to the scene, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the city.

Accounts suggest the detonation happened in a parking area near a residential building.

History of Assaults

Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a Ukrainian source in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.

The war has witnessed clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
