At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.
Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 people were detained.
Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.
The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police said over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the operation, in addition to numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by various security forces comes after a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
