Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who fled following the incident was found soon after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the building left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno told the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He thought the detonation had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told Italian media, adding that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
