Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
