Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza CEO Exits After Move Towards Chicken.
The head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit maximum pizza demand while broadening the chain into poultry items has been removed after conflicts with its directors.
Leadership Change
Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in charge, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot the UK's leading pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, remarking in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He observed chicken was the fastest-growing food category in the international market.
Board Disagreements
It is understood that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his strategy and management style, although Domino's official statement said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.
New Brand Introduction
In September, the chain introduced its chicken-focused brand – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Board Statement
Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and value creation in our primary operations. We are concentrating on finding the suitable leader to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Market Challenges
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by 1.5% in the third quarter. In August, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and higher payroll outlays for below-target performance and a 15% drop in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Another major chain disclosed the closure of multiple locations a last month, after the firm behind its outlets fell into administration.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced reduced-calorie products, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and gluten-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has 2,171, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the gaming group William Hill. It is believed that she is not seeking to occupy the CEO position permanently.
She said: “The company has a several active expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at a rapid rate.”
Frampton noted these included additional efforts on the organization's supply chain and product development, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also lacking a full-time chief financial officer until March 16, when Andrea joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. Until then, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
