Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
