Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of undesired gifts might be considered slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be sold to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. A date is yet to be set, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The presents are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

The detailed catalog remains made public, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The question centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from international counterparts and positioning Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This unique auction represents a unconventional way to manage the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
