New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a ā€œsnake and a untruthful personā€ and accusing him of having ā€œa history of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ However, in a new statement, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to support the former governor in areas where he holds significant backing.

ā€œI think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this election is,ā€ Adams commented.

The mayor further explained, ā€œThey have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.ā€

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, ā€œI’ll be with Andrew later today.ā€

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
