The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
