Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
