Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
